Wistman's Wood is a remarkable survivor of a past prehistoric forest that once covered much of Dartmoor. |
|||
|
A public footpath leads up the valley of the West Dart from the car park. It follows a track north as far as Crockern Farm and from there on is marked by orange spots on boulders. Before long you will see the wood up ahead, a strange patch of trees in an otherwise barren landscape. To return retrace your steps to the car park. Wistman's Wood: The Oaks in Wistman's Wood are so gnarled and twisted, so crusted with lichens and hung with ferns, that it is hard to judge their age, but their value for wildlife and as landscape features is undisputed and the wood has been designated a National Nature Reserve. Wildlife: There are many adders amongst those boulders, so watch where you stand. Other wildlife includes the beautiful redstart, a bird that comes here to breed. |
